Match the symptom
White Plains has four real seasons: humid summers, hard freezes and a lot of older housing. The same symptom can have very different causes, so here’s what each one usually means and who to call.
Could be the thermostat, ignition, oil or gas supply, airflow, a control board or a boiler safety control. Check the thermostat once, then call — especially if the equipment won’t start or you notice an odor.
Often a failed capacitor or contactor, a frozen coil, low refrigerant or a tripped float switch on the condensate line. Check mode, filter, breaker and outdoor clearance once.

Permits & standards
A new system is only as good as its installation. These are the standards behind a job done right — and the questions every installer should answer in writing before you sign.
Replacing or altering heating and cooling equipment may require a White Plains mechanical permit and inspection, and work shouldn’t start before a required permit is issued. Current requirements come from the White Plains Building Department at 255 Main Street. Ask who applies for the permit, who schedules the inspection and whether venting, fuel, electrical or duct changes affect the scope.
